For nearly 60 years the Barnett family has been producing quality publications here in the Mother Lode. It all started in 1963, when our mother and father, Dan & Marge Barnett purchased the Amador Dispatch. Throughout the years our parents were involved with several other prominent publications, The Buy & Sell Press started in 1973 with Emilio & Hazel Prunitti and The Scenic 88 Fun Times in 1976 with Larry Cenotto and Bob Branson. In 1978 Dan & Marge merged the Amador Dispatch with Mike & Pam Bohl’s Amador Ledger and Ione Progress News and formed a new publishing company called GoldWeb Publishing (this name will feature prominently farther down in the story). In 1989 Goldweb Publishing was sold to McClatchy Newspapers the owners of the Sacramento Bee and is now the Amador Ledger which is still publishing here in Amador County. Dan & Marge retained their interest in both the Buy & Sell Press with partners Craig & Donna Murphy and in the Scenic 88 Fun Times run by Ted & Kayleen Robinson. Upon Marge’s death in 1991, Dan continued with his publications until his death in 2019. Dan & Marge had four sons who have all worked in some capacity in the publishing business. We are proud to release the Mountain Merchant in their honor and dedicate this first issue in their memory.
Today, we proudly launch a new publishing company called Barnett Publishing Inc. with Brothers Kevin Barnett, Chris Barnett, Steve Barnett, and close family friend Erik Krisman. We hope you enjoy our newest venture into the publishing world and look forward to another 60 years of service to our beloved Mother Lode region.
Now what is the Mountain Merchant… It is a classified and display advertising publication distributed weekly in a 5-county region of the Mother Lode. Our new distribution area covers all Amador & Calaveras Counties as well as parts of El Dorado, Sacramento and San Joaquin counties.
